I play/own a soprano, alto, c melody, tenor, and bari sax. I've also played a sarrusophone, bass sax, and this
Conn-O-Sax.

Wow! That Conn-O-Sax looks huge! Where did you get that?

Aug 9 2005, 04:05 AM
It's not mine. A friend of mine bought it for a ton of money. Read more than $25,000.

Gandalfe, how high (or low) is the sarrusophone?
Gandalfe
Aug 10 2005, 03:38 AM
The sarrusophone I played was an Eb alto. They were made in sizes from Eb sopranino to BBb contrabass, including contrabasses in Eb, C, and Bb. The Sarrusophone was invented in the mid 1800's to compete with the Saxophone, and were intended to be used in military bands to replace oboes and bassoons. The one I played used an alto sax mouthpiece but it wasn't the original one. I've seen many players use a double reed like the one on a bassoon. You can listen to
the wav file of a lower (maybe Eb baritone or Bb bass version).

So the fingering of your saurrasophone is the same fingering of the E flat alto saxophone rite?
Ellymack
Aug 10 2005, 11:53 AM
I play mainly alto and tenor. I have 'dabbled' with a borrowed soprano, although I don't own one. I would play the C Melody, except that I can't afford to get it re-furbed yet. I also have a Xaphoon that I've yet to get to grips with.
Ahh - so many saxes, so little ability.

Oh no, it is significantly different, as I remember it, with a number of octave keys.

Actually, that advice is truer than you might think.

Yamaha saxes are notorious for having well-crafted, but fragile necks. I have a friend who owns a Yamaha Custom and is going on his third neck.

He's actually using a Selmer neck right now, and he loves it to .
Altosaxophonerules
Aug 18 2005, 10:36 PM
Are Selmer necks more durable? and do they sound better?
CMelodyMan77

Well, I can probably play every sax, considering they all have the same gingerings/ embouchure.

But CMel,
If you've never played a sopranino, or tubax, or soprillo, then you can't play it WELL without experience

Honestly it's really just the way you like your tone, I wouldn't say they sound any better or worse, and to be honest, you really shouldn't worry yourself with finding the perfect neck right now. Focus on the reed/mpc/ligature combinations, becuase those will affect your tone more, and are honestly cheaper than shopping for necks.

i am going to buy tomorrow morning so please gave me some quick tips on what mouthpiece to get. I want to get the S80 or S90. or buy one of those and a soloist one.
JPSaxMan
Aug 20 2005, 04:34 AM
Dude, if you're going for a jazz sound the S80 nor S90 will help. They will stuff you up like Andre the Giant with a headcold.
Try Meyer, Otto Link Tone Edge (*6 or under, ask CMel on that one

), and any other reputable piece BESIDES an S80 or S90. I played on an S80 C* for the longest time until I got my Dukoff D7 (metal NOT recommended for bare beginners)...then my sound and my perception changed forever. So, DON'T, I REPEAT, DON'T GET AN S80 OR S90!!!!!!!!!!!
Think I stressed it enough?
Altosaxophonerules
Aug 20 2005, 05:30 AM
how about the soloist mouthpiece>? I think i tried the S90 out before and I found ok, it just felt better than my yamaha mouthpiece.
JPSaxMan
Aug 20 2005, 05:57 AM
Maybe a Soloist but seriously

...go for an Otto Link HR or Meyer HR for a jazzier sound than Selmer can provide

Alto Tenor and soprano. i ahve played a bari and the low notes were like heaven!
What about Berg Larson mouthpieces? Mine suits my tenor just fine but i've heard they can be a bit thin sounding and more suited for funk/fusion/rockish styles more than jazz.

[COLOR=blue][B]I play alto for just practice, soprano for sax quartet, bari for band, and tenor for marching band, i own alto and soprano, the soprano is awesome, nice sounding, its a straight soprano, not one of those curved ones. I only know about those 4 kinds and not much of other kinds of saxs other than what you guys have talked about. if some of you guys could fill me in a little bit better, it would be much appreciated

This is the most complete list I could come up with off of the top of my head, listed from low to high. I know there are a few others (Conn-O-Sax, Sarrousaphone, etc..) But these are all of the standard horns.
Bb Sub-Contrabass (Some of the early Tubax models, not positive on if they're still made any more, I know for sure that the Eb Tubax is still made)
Eb Contrabass
Bb Bass
Eb Baritone
Bb Tenor
C Tenor (C Melody)
Eb Alto
F Alto (F Mezzo-soprano)
C Soprano
Bb Soprano
Eb Sopranino
Bb Piccolo (Soprillo)
Here are some sites for great sound clips and pictures of some of the stranger horns.
Benedikt EppelsheimJay C. EastonFeel free to edit this list if you all can think of any other saxes that are missing.
